The dreaded camera.

For many, the thought of having a picture taken is terrifying. This includes many of our clients at first, until they see themselves in gorgeous photographs.

Having your picture taken can be even more frightening if you feel you have gained weight.

In the studio, we know how to use lighting, makeup, hair, wardrobe and posing to flatter all body types.

But, what if you are out with friends and someone yells “selfie time”? Or, your bestie asks the waiter to get a group shot at girls night?

The good news is there is no such thing as photogenic. Looking beautiful in photographs isn’t about your body size, type or age.

You just need to know the secrets of a photographer!

How to Avoid a Double Chin in Photographs

You know how a turtle pulls his head out of a shell to check out the world?

That’s how we start every pose in the studio, to get an elongated neck. So embrace your inner turtle when the camera comes out.  It’s the easiest way to avoid a double chin with short notice.

The unflattering double chin is the reason people like to take selfies from up high, but that angle also distorts the nose. A better solution it’s better to turtle your neck out, bend it slightly down, and keep the camera at eye level.

What Clothes Are the Most Flattering Photographs

The reason we have a studio wardrobe is that what you wear can make or break a photograph. If you are feeling like you need to lose weight, a common mistake women often make is wearing clothes too big, that hang on the body. Too much fabric makes a person look bigger than her frame.

If you have a plus-size figure, make sure to highlight the right curves with a balanced wardrobe. For instance, when donning a form-fitting piece, such as skinny jeans or a snug top, the key is to balance the tightness with something looser. This could mean pairing those sleek skinny jeans with a blazer or teaming a fitted top with wide-leg trousers. This way you are showing off the curves you love.

If you have an hourglass shape, emphasize your waist to accentuate your curves. Consider using belts, cinched tops, or dresses with a defined waistline. This draws attention to the narrowest part of your body, creating a more balanced and flattering silhouette.

Think Triangles

Don’t let both hands fall to sides, as this makes the body appear wider.  To create shape, think triangles.  Put your hands on your waist, or one hand on your hip. Play with hair, or prop your elbow up on a table and bring your hand to your face.

Why You Should Lean In

Leaning in towards the camera not flatters your figure, it also draws the viewer’s gaze upward to your face, hair, smile and eyes. Additionally, leaning towards the camera defines the waist and reduces double chins. Yes please!

All body types should typically avoid standing straight in front facing the camera. In the mirror, experiment with angles by turning your body slightly to the side. This will also help if you feel your eyes or smile are asymmetrical.
